The Spokesperson for Walter Sisulu University (WSU), Yonela Tukwayo,
confirmed with great sadness and regret the passing of a student from the
University’s Buffalo City Campus on Monday evening, August 30, 2021.
She said that the third year Human Resource Management student was
stabbed to death by a fellow student over an alleged “muthi”
squabble at their WSU St. Patrick’s Court student residence in Southernwood.
According to Tukwayo, the dearly deceased student is from Duncan Village
outside East London and the accused, a third year Mechanical Engineering
student, from Cambridge in East London.
“WSU residence officials and the landlords are currently working in
co-operation with the South African Police Services’ processes at the crime
scene. We have also arranged group and individual counselling sessions for
other students at the residence who may have been affected by the incident,”
she said.
Tukwayo added that WSU students who experience challenges are always
encouraged to approach the campus’ Student Development and Support Services
department for intervention in cases such as conflict resolution.
According to her, the University condemns acts of violence of any
nature on and off campus. “Violence has reached unprecedented proportions
that should be a great concern to everyone. “The South African Police
Services have apprehended the accused who is currently in custody at the Fleet
Street police station.
The university will also be
visiting the family of the deceased to support where possible.”
