Yonela Ngewu (26), from Mnqandanto location in Tsolo, hosted an information day with the aim of helping other farmers in her area, recently.
She invited different departmental officials to share their information. She said she had decided to host this event because she realised that some of them did not have knowledge about where they could get help to develop their dreams.
Ngewu is a farmer who specialises in mixed farming.
“I asked officials from different departments to share their information so that we could get a lot (of help) from them. This would help because we would be able to decrease the high unemployment in our community. If young people embraced farming, we could fight poverty,” said Ngewu.
She said she started farming in 2019 with the aim of assisting her family because she is the bread winner, adding that she never learned to be a farmer but developed a love for it after she started with a small portion of land.
Ngewu said, even though there were some challenges , at the end of the day, she had gained good benefits. She added that women should know that farming is not only for men but that women can succeed if they dedicate themselves.
“When you are planning to do farming, people discourage (you) but just know what you want to achieve.
“My aim is to see young farmers growing, that is why I even host these events,” she said.
